You’re in our gym in Jacksonville and are really crushing your workout at the Team Ozone. You feel great about what you’re doing and are definitely feeling the burn. Yet in the back of your mind, you wonder if it’s enough. It doesn’t have to remain a mystery! There is a simple and effective way to know how well you’re training: know your target heart rate.
Whether you are a seasoned athlete or a complete beginner, a deeper knowledge of your target heart rate can help you monitor your fitness level, how many calories you are burning, and provide you with the necessary information to ensure you are maximizing your workouts.
To calculate your maximum target heart rate, take 220 minus your age.
For example, if you are 20 years old, your maximum target heart rate would be 200 bpm (220-20 = 200).You will not want to exceed your maximum heart rate. If you do, it normally means you are straining, which isn’t beneficial for the body. Typically within a good workout, you will want to be between 50-85% of your maximum target heart rate.
To follow the above example, an average 20 year old’s ideal target ranges would fall between 100-170 bpm. This is the range that encourages fat loss and calorie burn.
If you are just starting out, it is recommended to aim for a lower range, which is around 50% of your target heart rate. If you are more experienced, feel free to push yourself further to around 70%-85% of your target heart rate.
It all begins with one step: discovering your target heart rate. Once you have this piece of information, you will be well on your way to getting the most out of your fitness journey.
